What defines Taekwondo
“Taekwondo” is Korean and translates literally as “the art of hand and foot fighting”.
Taekwondo has a tradition spanning more than 2,000 years and originates in Korea. Yet it is also a modern sport: since the year 2000, Taekwondo has been an Olympic discipline – and at the same time a modern form of self-defence.
Taekwondo promotes health and, alongside physical agility, instils self-discipline in thought and conduct, which in turn strengthens self-confidence. Thanks to its versatility, it can be practised by people of every age.
But it is far more than that: it means the scientifically grounded use of the body in self-defence exercises, allowing the mobilisation of all one’s reserves through intensive physical and mental training.
Through the discipline associated with Taekwondo, its techniques and the mental training it imparts, it lays the foundation for a strong sense of justice, courage, humility and determination.

Taekwondo in practice
Taekwondo is fast, technically and tactically demanding – and highly exciting.
- Forms (Poomse) are mandatory for every Taekwondoka who wishes to take belt examinations.
- A new form (Poomse) must be learned for each examination.
- The forms are a fixed sequence of attacking and defensive techniques performed against an imaginary opponent.
- Forms are also a competitive discipline and are practised at tournaments.
- Judged are, for example, the precision of execution, the expression and the dynamics of the movements.
